The U.S. Department of Justice accused Yale University of violating federal law by using a race-based admissions program in its medical school, citing differences in grade-point averages and standardized test scores among admitted cohorts. The DOJ letter alleges Black and Hispanic students had higher admission rates than white or Asian applicants for entry years 2023 through 2025. DOJ said it wants a voluntary resolution agreement and warned it can pursue court action if Yale does not comply. Yale’s School of Medicine responded that it is confident in its rigorous admissions process and said it will review the DOJ letter. The action marks the second medical school discrimination case brought by DOJ in the same month, following a similar notification to UCLA’s medical school. It also comes amid ongoing pressure since President Donald Trump returned to office to limit or end the use of race in admissions following the Supreme Court’s 2023 affirmative-action ban.
