A coalition of disability and education organizations sued the U.S. Department of Education and the White House Office of Management and Budget, arguing the federal government is withholding nearly $2 billion in congressionally appropriated education research funds. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The complaint says the Education Department’s Institute of Education Sciences and OMB failed to “apportion” funding slated for education research, data collection, program evaluation, and assistance to states and districts for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. Plaintiffs said the withheld resources affect researchers, schools, and families—especially students with disabilities—by limiting access to research-based guidance. The Education Department said it remains committed to using appropriated funds to meet statutory obligations.
