Three dozen colleges and universities backed Harvard University’s court challenge against the Trump administration over federal research grant cancellations and freezes, filing an amicus brief arguing that wholesale terminations can damage U.S. scientific capacity. The support follows Harvard’s lawsuit filed in April 2025, after multiple government agencies cut research funding in connection with allegations of campus antisemitism. A federal court vacated grant terminations and freezes in September, and the administration appealed in December. In the July 22 amicus brief, the institutions argued that temporary and arbitrary funding disruptions can derail experiments, ruin early-career researchers’ trajectories, and harm the broader federal research infrastructure—even when the disputes are not tied to the merits of funded research. Signatories highlighted that federal funding underwrites national security and public welfare, with several of the named institutions reportedly having their own negotiations or restoration agreements with the administration.
