House Republicans advanced a package of bills that would permanently relocate major U.S. Department of Education program management to other Cabinet agencies, including shifts for K-12 formula grants and career and technical education. The measures, introduced by Rep. Tim Walberg’s House Education and the Workforce Committee, would codify many existing interagency agreements created during the Trump administration. The proposal includes moving most major K-12 programs—such as Title I and CTE—into the Department of Labor, shifting some family engagement and school social services to the Department of Health and Human Services, and directing the Treasury Department to take over federal student loan administration. Supporters say this would harden current administrative changes into law. The bill package is expected to move quickly to committee consideration, but could face major procedural hurdles in the Senate requiring Democratic support. Advocates and critics are also likely to focus on special education governance, given that some earlier executive moves shifted administration to HHS.
