The National College Attainment Network reported that FAFSA completion for the Class of 2026 reached record levels, with 54.7% of graduating seniors completing the form by May 1. NCAN said the figure rose from 53.9% last year and 47.3% in 2024, when FAFSA’s overhauled rollout created delays and frustration. NCAN credited earlier form availability this cycle—September instead of December—along with “FAFSA simplification” becoming embedded in counselor workflows. It also pointed to broader state policies: nine states now have universal FAFSA completion requirements tied to graduation. The jump improves near-term enrollment and affordability prospects for participating cohorts, while increasing the odds of stronger downstream completion rates as financial aid becomes more reliably packaged earlier in the admissions cycle.
