The State University System of Florida will terminate at least 18 degree programs and suspend eight more after a systemwide productivity review identified 214 underperforming programs, officials told lawmakers. Emily Sikes, vice chancellor for academic and student affairs, said bachelor’s programs graduating fewer than 30 students over three years and similar thresholds for graduate programs drove the decisions. The cuts disproportionately affect liberal-arts, education and science fields — including ethnic studies, foreign languages and philosophy — and come as other states consider similar mandates on program productivity and consolidation.
