California State University, Fresno will not reappoint several foundation board members after a system review found governance and documentation failures at the independent foundation that oversees a large share of philanthropic and research-related activity. The Fresno Bee reported the reappointment decision follows a scathing review identifying multiple missteps. Fresno State President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval decided not to reappoint five members after the California State University system review determined the foundation failed to adequately document foundation payments and ignored parts of its own rules. The system review did not find malfeasance, according to the reporting. The foundation oversees roughly $315 million in endowments and grants. The review also pushed for board composition changes to include more university representation, but the foundation board resisted, according to the Bee. For higher education fiduciary oversight, the case highlights how foundation governance reviews can directly affect institutional research funding administration and philanthropic continuity.
