The Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) announced a Higher Education Governance Integrity Initiative aimed at strengthening board effectiveness, accountability, and public trust. AGB is sharing a national governance framework with legislators and executive leaders and said the recommendations are designed to reinforce nonpartisan fiduciary oversight. AGB’s release points to persistent governance gaps, including a reported 43% of trustees lacking full confidence in their understanding of fiduciary duties and governance boundaries. The organization also cites increasing politicization of public boards and blurred lines between governance and management as drivers of presidential instability. The initiative’s five-part framework focuses on strengthening trustee selection, modernizing trustee training, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and improving accountability structures. For public institutions in particular, the framework signals an effort to reduce leadership volatility by tightening governance operations and expectations before further board crises emerge.
