A new UNCF study finds many high-school students receive little exposure to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in their college planning. While two-thirds of teachers and counselors reported some familiarity with HBCUs, more than 60% of surveyed students said they were not familiar with these institutions; exposure was lowest among Hispanic and White students. Counselors cited heavy caseloads and limited classroom time; just 27% of teachers said they include HBCU information in lesson plans. The gap in awareness matters for access and enrollment pipelines and suggests K–12 outreach and counselor capacity are critical levers for diversifying college applicant pools.
