Historically Black colleges and universities are convening experts and leaders to confront high rates of presidential turnover and board conflict after recent governance crises at institutions such as Morris Brown College, HBCU practitioners and consultants said. Sessions at recent gatherings focused on board development, succession planning, and financial management to stem leadership churn that threatens accreditation, fundraising and academic continuity. Participants argued for regional leadership pipelines, shared services, and governance best practices tailored to HBCU missions. Trustees and system leaders should prioritize multi‑year CEO searches, clearer contract terms and strengthened board‑president relationships to stabilize campuses. Funders and state policymakers may consider targeted capacity grants to retain institutional leaders and reduce turnover risk.
