France’s public health authority reports a jump in heat-wave–related mortality, with at least 2,000 additional deaths during the hottest week of a record heat wave and pressure rising on hospital systems. Public Health France said its updated tally for June 22–28 includes 8,973 deaths so far, with a nearly 63% increase in deaths from the prior week in the Paris region and steep increases in private-home, care-home, and hospital deaths. Health officials also reported a surge of patients presenting for dehydration, heart and kidney issues. Universities and colleges with residential populations and summer programs face heightened risk-management needs: emergency preparedness, cooling access, public-health communications, and coordination with local health agencies become immediate operational priorities during extreme heat events.
