Bard College president Leon Botstein announced he will retire at the end of June after an independent review found his communications with Jeffrey Epstein “reflect on his leadership of Bard,” though it found no illegal conduct. Botstein said he timed his retirement announcement to allow the review to finish. The review, conducted with outside law firm WilmerHale, determined that while Epstein was not tied to alleged abuse by Botstein, Botstein minimized or was not fully accurate about the nature of their relationship. The disclosure includes Epstein-related communications and decisions Bard leadership previously treated as fundraising-focused. The retirement follows years of reputational risk management for elite institutions as trustees increasingly rely on outside counsel, broaden compliance expectations, and tighten oversight of leadership conduct.
