The U.S. Department of Justice accused Yale University of violating Title VI by illegally considering race in admissions to its School of Medicine, alleging that Black and Hispanic applicants had a higher chance of admission than white or Asian applicants despite lower GPA and test scores. DOJ said the university has continued a race-based admissions program despite the Supreme Court’s 2023 ban on affirmative action in college admissions. DOJ asked Yale to enter a voluntary resolution agreement and said it can pursue court action if compliance cannot be achieved. Yale said it is confident in its admissions process and will review DOJ’s letter, framing admissions decisions as rigorous and aligned with its medical education mission. The case follows a similar DOJ notification to UCLA’s medical school earlier last week, placing more medical schools and health-professions programs under scrutiny as institutions continue to redesign admissions policies under shifting federal enforcement priorities.
