A federal judge granted additional colleges a delay to submit newly required U.S. Department of Education admissions data by race and sex, after litigation over the collection. The ruling extends the deadline for institutional members of the Association of American Universities and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts. The groups’ members will now have until April 14 to submit data, while other court decisions earlier had moved deadlines for public colleges in states led by 17 Democratic attorneys general. The lawsuit challenges whether the department’s data demand is permissible while it seeks to evaluate compliance with the 2023 Supreme Court ruling limiting race-conscious admissions. The judge also scheduled a hearing for April 13 on whether to grant a preliminary injunction and whether the associations can join the legal challenge.
