The Association of Governing Boards (AGB) unveiled a national governance framework aimed at strengthening higher-ed board effectiveness, accountability, and public trust through its Higher Education Governance Integrity Initiative. AGB says the approach is designed to be nonpartisan and focuses on clearer board roles, fiduciary boundaries, and improved trustee onboarding. AGB’s release cites evidence that governance challenges are widening, including reports that 43% of trustees do not feel fully confident about fiduciary duties and governance boundaries. The framework’s recommendations include strengthening trustee selection and modernizing trustee training, among other measures. For public institutions and boards under political pressure, the immediate relevance is operational: clearer governance lines are intended to reduce presidential instability, protect institutional independence, and stabilize mission stewardship.
