The American Association of University Professors announced it is investigating academic freedom and shared governance violations across Texas colleges and universities. AAUP leadership said the review focuses on how state actions and new policies have accelerated political control over curriculum and limited faculty influence. At issue is implementation of Texas Senate Bill 37 and related changes, including provisions that shift faculty council or senate creation authority to governing boards and increase presidential discretion over leadership and meeting structures. AAUP said it is examining a broad range of impacts, including restrictions on faculty governance, program closures, limits on protest and campus speech, and growing board intervention into academic affairs. AAUP national president Todd Wolfson said the pattern has intensified over the last nine months and that the organization wants to document systemic effects rather than address incidents case by case.
