The National Education Association (NEA) approved spending from its national contingency fund to address issues confronting teachers, including immigration enforcement and artificial intelligence in schools. Delegates authorized roughly half of the $1.94 million contingency budget for new business and emergency support for state and local union litigation and advocacy. In the biggest-ticket action described, delegates created an emergency fund of nearly $200,000 to help an estimated 14,000 to 20,000 teachers dealing with immigration-related challenges, following close, high-emotion votes. The NEA’s annual Representative Assembly also dedicated training time to thousands of representatives for local organizing and advocacy. NEA leadership signaled a continued focus on strengthening connections to local affiliates, especially in states where legislative restrictions limit union activity.
