At the University of Lincoln, union members passed a “no confidence” vote in senior leadership, and at Northumbria University, staff face renewed pressure as job cuts and pension changes spur threatened further strikes. The University and College Union (UCU) cited plans to save £5 million that the union said would eliminate roughly one in 10 jobs before Christmas. Northumbria’s dispute also includes efforts to encourage staff to switch pensions from the Teachers’ Pension Scheme to the Universities Superannuation Scheme, with UCU previously striking for 13 days over the pension change. The union said management refused to rule out compulsory redundancies, and it described the latest proposals as damaging for students’ learning. Both institutions now face heightened governance and labor relations risk, with UCU portraying the actions as eroding staff wellbeing, job security, and teaching and research quality.
