The U.S. Department of Justice accused Yale University’s medical school of illegally using race in admissions, alleging that Black and Hispanic applicants have a higher chance of admission than white or Asian applicants with similar academic profiles. The DOJ said a yearlong investigation found Yale continued a race-based admissions program despite the Supreme Court’s mandate for reform. Assistant attorney general Harmeet Dhillon said the Justice Department will continue to pursue institutions it believes are violating federal law, including through the use of racial proxies. Yale said it would review the DOJ letter and defended its admissions process as rigorous, while the DOJ action mirrors a broader enforcement push that has targeted medical schools in multiple universities and includes examinations for potential circumvention of the Supreme Court’s restrictions.
