The Association of Governing Boards (AGB) urged states to adopt a national governance integrity framework aimed at strengthening board effectiveness, trustee selection, and accountability as higher education faces intensified public scrutiny. AGB said it is advancing a Higher Education Governance Integrity Initiative that includes five policy recommendations: strengthening trustee selection, modernizing trustee education, establishing fiduciary certification, reforming nomination processes, and preparing board chairs for their leadership responsibilities. The association also weighed in on proposed Accreditation, Innovation, and Modernization (AIM) regulations, arguing that governance is foundational to institutional quality and student success—raising questions about the division of oversight responsibilities between states and accreditors.
