Soka University of America is moving toward acquiring Middlebury College’s international studies institute campus in California and selecting graduate programs after both institutions began exclusive negotiations. The proposed deal would expand Soka’s graduate portfolio and create a second campus in Monterey, with recruitment potentially starting as early as this summer if the transaction closes. Middlebury is winding down its in-person programs at the Institute of International Studies in Monterey and has already announced a sunset for remaining online programs by summer 2027. Soka’s interest includes rights to continue programming in areas such as nonproliferation studies, threat intelligence, translation and localization management, and international policy and development. The institutions are conducting due diligence and have not disclosed the acquisition price. For students and enrollment leaders, the development underscores how international education offerings can consolidate when schools sunset programs—shifting where students can complete graduate study and where tuition and grants may flow next.
