The Iowa Board of Regents approved a new process to review general education courses at the state’s three public universities for “substantial” diversity, equity, inclusion, and critical race theory content starting in the 2026–27 academic year. The plan cleared the board in a 5–3 vote and is intended to bridge a perceived gap between legislative concerns and classroom realities. Board President Robert Cramer said the reviews would not automatically cut courses or require new requirements, and that results are expected to be far narrower than some lawmakers anticipate. The board estimated the reviews will take more than 1,000 staff hours across universities and its office. Regent Nancy Dunkel, who voted against, warned the process could disadvantage institutions in competitive arenas such as recruitment and outside investment by creating the perception that content is subject to political review.
