Case Western Reserve University received a $125 million commitment from the Mandel Foundation, its largest single gift in the foundation’s history and the biggest higher-education gift in Ohio. The funds will support four initiatives: a new humanities building, expanded student scholarships, a presidential discretionary fund, and growth of the “experimental humanities” program. The planned Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Humanities Building will be a 50,000-square-foot center focused on human-centered digital scholarship, interdisciplinary creativity, and community partnerships. The gift also aims to double scholarship capacity in the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, strengthening support for social work students across socioeconomic backgrounds. The commitment further establishes a presidential fund for leadership-directed investments and provides scholarships and stipends for fellows in experimental humanities. The announcement positions the humanities as a central strategic lever at a time when many institutions are cutting or consolidating programs due to financial and enrollment pressures.
