The Ballmer Group committed $77 million to two California State University campuses to expand mental health services in the Los Angeles area, aiming to address a youth mental-health crisis. Cal State LA will receive $48 million to train more than 1,000 new counselors and social workers, including capacity expansions in its one-year Master of Social Work and related school-based family counseling programs. California State University, Dominguez Hills will receive $29 million to educate hundreds of mental health professionals and launch Toros Heal L.A., an initiative focused on training, licensure preparation, and emergency aid. Ballmer said funding will primarily support scholarships, with both projects designed to build a culturally responsive workforce rooted in local communities. The gifts are among the largest in each institution’s history and reflect growing philanthropic focus on workforce pipelines for behavioral health. For system leaders, the investment is a near-term lever to increase counselor and social-work placement capacity while strengthening clinical staffing coverage in K–12 and community settings.
