Virginia Wesleyan University officially changed its name to Batten University, effective July 1, nearly a year after it announced the transition. The new name recognizes Jane Batten and the Batten family’s longtime philanthropic support and aligns the university with a brand intended to reduce confusion associated with the former “Wesleyan” name. University officials said the change is meant to strengthen recruiting and visibility as the institution expands its footprint in the Virginia Beach region and abroad. Some alumni have protested the decision, arguing it diminishes the institution’s Methodist roots and weakens alumni identity. The university’s leadership said the transition reflects a “bold vision” and highlighted that its accreditor has signed off on related expansion plans, including a planned acquisition involving Sentara College of Health Sciences.
