The University of Nebraska System warned it faces an unexpected $36 million reduction in state funding as it begins a fiscal year already shaped by additional austerity measures. The cut followed Nebraska tax revenues coming in $307 million short of projections for fiscal year 2026. Gov. Jim Pillen ordered state agencies to freeze hiring without state approval and reduce travel and other spending, and NU System President Jeffrey Gold said administrators are working with the governor’s office on compliance expectations while trying to protect teaching, research, and statewide engagement. NU System institutions have already absorbed multiple rounds of cuts in recent years, including program reductions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln that triggered deep campus tensions and a faculty no-confidence vote in 2025 involving then-chancellor Rodney Bennett. Gold said further cuts may not be sustainable “without the ability to predict even a single year of stability,” and the system is expected to release more details soon on hiring restrictions and budgeting guidance for each campus.
