Sal Khan is spinning up Khan TED Institute (KTI), a new “AI-first” college built to compete directly with traditional degree programs rather than support existing institutions. The institute’s first credential is an applied artificial intelligence degree planned as a four-year, competency-based program delivered online at a claimed $10,000 price point. KTI’s structure brings together Khan Academy, TED, and the Educational Testing Service, alongside “thought partners” from employers such as Google, Microsoft, and Accenture. Instruction is described as self-guided and portfolio-centered, with less emphasis on live lectures and more on group work, simulations, and discussions. Leaders are seeking “traditional accreditation,” which could delay the arrival of students by 12 to 24 months. The stated aim is to provide “durable skills” like communication, collaboration, and creativity as AI changes jobs, while pairing employer input with assessments tied to real outputs.
