The Computer Science Teachers Association is launching a multistate $11 million initiative to train K-12 educators in foundational computer science and artificial intelligence instruction through “AI PD Weeks.” The program will run weeklong, hands-on cohorts across Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, New Jersey, and South Carolina between June and August, with a planned expansion to additional states in year two. CSTA frames the initiative as practical professional development, responding to teacher demand for strategies rather than abstract guidance. Funding comes from the National Science Foundation under an executive order focused on advancing AI education for youth. CSTA leaders argue that generative AI makes coding more accessible, but does not remove the value of learning core computer science principles needed for an AI-powered world. The initiative also reflects a broader constraint on schools: district leaders are juggling multiple priorities while lacking in-house expertise for rapid changes in AI tools and pedagogy.
