Northwestern University agreed to pay $75 million to the U.S. Treasury and accept policy conditions to resolve federal investigations and regain access to hundreds of millions in research grants. The deal, negotiated with the Trump administration, requires the school to revoke the Deering Meadow agreement, develop training materials aimed at international students, and reaffirm compliance with Title IX. Interim president Henry Bienen said the university preserved control over hiring, admissions and curriculum during talks. Education Secretary Linda McMahon framed the settlement as a model for campuses under federal scrutiny. The agreement follows a funding cutoff that contributed to layoffs and the resignation of former president Michael Schill, and comes after Columbia, Brown and Cornell reached similar pacts. The settlement sets a new benchmark for how the federal government can leverage research dollars to press universities on campus conduct and compliance, and it creates operational obligations institutions may now face when negotiating with federal agencies.
