Coursera and Udemy completed their previously announced merger, combining two major online learning platforms to capture savings and accelerate artificial intelligence investments. Company leaders said the deal is expected to reduce operating costs by $115 million over the next two years and enable additional AI innovation. The merged platforms will reach roughly 290 million learners and include about 95,000 instructors, alongside hundreds of university and industry partners. Coursera CEO Greg Hart said the combined system will move “beyond a content catalog” toward an adaptive skills platform designed for outcomes in the AI era. The transaction required shareholder approval, which occurred in April, and it positions the combined entity to compete in corporate upskilling and workforce development where credentialing is increasingly tied to demonstrated skills. For higher education institutions and training providers, the merger increases the scale and data footprint of third-party learning ecosystems that increasingly mediate credit, certifications, and workforce-aligned learning pathways.
