Coursera and Udemy finalized their merger, combining platforms used by about 290 million learners and supported by hundreds of university and industry partners. The companies say the deal will cut operating costs by $115 million over two years and help them invest in and scale AI innovations across their learning products. In their announcement, leaders positioned the combined business as moving “beyond a content catalog” toward an adaptive, intelligent, and “agentic” skills-delivery system. The stated goal is to link skills development more directly to real-world outcomes for both individuals and organizations. For higher education leaders, the merger signals intensified competition for online credentialing and corporate upskilling—particularly as AI-driven personalization becomes a key product differentiator.
