Bard College President Leon Botstein will retire at the end of the academic year after an independent investigation concluded he downplayed his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein to the campus community. The report by WilmerHale said Botstein frequently contacted and visited Epstein between 2012 and 2019, including roughly 25 visits to Epstein’s townhome and a two-day visit to his private island. Bard’s governing board said Botstein submitted his intent to retire after the review, and the institution plans an interim leader followed by a national search that includes “a wide range of stakeholder input.” Botstein’s stated position in the investigation was that he did not see reputational risk to Bard or potential risk to students from pursuing Epstein. The personnel decision is likely to reverberate through higher-ed governance models that rely on long-tenured leaders, fundraising capacity, and board alignment—especially as scrutiny intensifies around institutional oversight and accountability.
