Anna Maria College in Massachusetts announced it will close at the end of its spring term after years of financial pressure that left the school unable to meet obligations to students, faculty, and staff. The decision came after the governing board and leadership explored options including mergers and other partnerships, but concluded that continued operations would not be responsible. The closure follows warnings from the New England Commission of Higher Education and the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education. The college said it risked violating standards tied to institutional resources and had dwindling financial cushion, including long-term debt and a sharply reduced endowment position. Anna Maria will halt academic offerings after the spring semester and close by the end of 2026. The college is the second Massachusetts institution to announce closure plans this month, after Hampshire College.
