Iowa’s Board of Regents approved elimination of ten programs through closures or mergers at two state universities as part of a low-enrollment review. The University of Iowa will end seven programs, while the University of Northern Iowa will close three graduate programs. The board previously mandated that all three public universities review low-enrollment degrees, setting thresholds of 25 or fewer students for bachelor’s programs and 10 or fewer for graduate programs. Universities then developed plans for program closures or mergers aimed at improving administrative efficiency and workforce alignment. Although several additional programs fell below the metrics, the universities did not move to cut everything, citing faculty efforts and workforce needs. Iowa State is seeking additional board approvals starting in June for its proposed program changes.
