SUNY Fredonia moved to sunset 10 undergraduate majors, four graduate programs, and seven minors as it addresses an $8.1 million budget deficit. The institution said the affected programs will stop enrolling new students after this fall, while currently enrolled students will be able to complete their studies. SUNY Fredonia attributed the decision to factors including enrollment trends, degree production, workforce alignment, and long-term program sustainability. The university reported that the discontinued programs together represent less than 5% of headcount, with 111 students enrolled in fall 2026 across the slated degrees. The cut plan also included retention initiatives and exploration of shared services across the SUNY system, while the university said it is reallocating funds into growing areas—such as a new clinical mental health counseling graduate program and a music studies degree.
