Utah’s measles outbreak has slowed but remains active enough to threaten another surge as students return to school and colder weather arrives, state epidemiologist Leisha Nolen warned. Utah has logged more than 680 cases since the first outbreak began June 20, 2025, and infections have spread across many counties, particularly where vaccination rates lag. The story notes measles has appeared in healthcare settings, retail and restaurants, and at youth sporting events; a February exposure at a Utah high school wrestling championship seeded at least 46 additional cases. Although the vaccine is described as 97% protective after two doses, Utah statewide vaccination coverage remains well below the 95% benchmark needed to prevent outbreaks. With infection spread affecting 22 of 29 counties and more than 16% of kindergarteners in the state’s “tricounty” region missing measles vaccination, campus and community health leaders are likely to need renewed immunization verification, outbreak response readiness, and communication to at-risk families ahead of fall.
