SUNY Fredonia moved to close a significant set of academic offerings to address an $8.1 million budget deficit. The institution is sunsetting 10 undergraduate majors, four graduate programs, and seven minors after this fall, stopping new student enrollment while allowing current students to complete their studies. SUNY Fredonia said the discontinued programs will enroll about 111 students in fall 2026 and the minors about 60 students—less than 5% of total headcount. The university also pointed to shrinking operating margins in multiple degrees, alongside an effort to redeploy resources into areas tied to student demand. Alongside the academic wind-down, Fredonia is investing in retention initiatives and exploring shared services across SUNY to reduce operational expenses. The decision adds to a broader, high-stakes pressure on enrollment-dependent departments as public institutions seek sustainability without abandoning long-term strategy.
