San José State University professor Sang Hea Kil, a tenured full professor, announced she is suing California State University after an arbitrator ordered her reinstatement. Kil filed suit to “vindicate the gross violation” of her civil rights, alleging she was fired by SJSU in 2025 in response to pro-Palestinian activism and speech supporting Muslim and Arab communities. Her lawsuit alleges violations of the California Fair Housing and Employment Act, Title VII, and the First Amendment, tying the alleged punishment to protected advocacy. Kil’s legal team includes civil rights lawyers at Hadsell Stormer Renick & Dai LLP, and CSU spokespersons did not respond to a request for comment. The case adds to ongoing litigation over campus political speech and retaliation claims, and it raises new risk-management questions for public university systems handling activism-related conduct and due process.
