Soka University of America (SUA) began exclusive negotiations to acquire Middlebury College’s international studies campus in Monterey and selected Middlebury Institute of International Studies master’s programs. The deal would expand SUA’s graduate portfolio and add a second campus, with leaders stating both boards approved a letter of intent and due diligence is underway. Middlebury has been winding down in-person programs and certain online offerings, with remaining online programs set to sunset in summer 2027. SUA’s planned Monterey unit would market as “Monterey Institute of International Studies at Soka University of America,” and current students would be able to complete programs through the summer 2027 deadline. The acquisition would also continue nonproliferation studies, threat intelligence, translation and localization management, and international policy and development programs, reflecting how graduate institutions are reconfiguring capacity after downsizing decisions.
