The California State University Board of Trustees has named Michael Spagna as Sonoma State University’s permanent president, tapping a veteran Cal State administrator to lead a campus amid steep enrollment declines and a multimillion-dollar deficit. Spagna will take office Jan. 20 and inherits a fiscal plan that earlier this year called for program eliminations, staff and faculty cuts and the possible termination of the NCAA Division II athletic department. The campus fell more than 13% in headcount year-over-year and trustees said they expect Spagna to accelerate enrollment recovery, implement cost controls, and rebuild trust with faculty and students after a turbulent leadership interregnum.
