National Student Clearinghouse Research Center data show spring higher education enrollment rose 1% year over year, reaching 18.6 million students, but the increase masks pressure in graduate education. Undergraduate enrollment reached 15.5 million (+1.3%), while graduate headcount dipped 0.1% to 3.1 million. The growth was concentrated in undergraduate programs at public institutions, including a 3.1% rise at community colleges and a 1.5% increase at public four-years. By contrast, graduate enrollment declines were driven by reductions in master’s programs and international student enrollment at graduate schools. Program-level shifts also stood out: undergraduate certificate programs grew fastest (+10.2%), while computer science enrollment fell sharply, including an 8.4% decline at four-year colleges and an 11.2% drop at two-year institutions.
