The University of Nebraska System warned it is facing an unexpected $36 million cut in state funding as it enters a fiscal year that already includes austerity measures. NU System President Jeffrey Gold said administrators are coordinating with the governor’s office on expectations while continuing to uphold institutional missions. Nebraska’s tax revenue reportedly missed projections for fiscal 2026, triggering Gov. Jim Pillen’s July 8 memo to freeze hiring without state approval and reduce travel and other spending. Gold emphasized that the system has already reduced spending by $8 million and said limits are being reached—particularly when campuses face a “constant cycle of cuts” with little year-to-year stability. The budget pressure is occurring in the wake of prior program cuts at UNL and campus tensions that included a no-confidence vote in former chancellor Rodney Bennett. NU System said it will release details on hiring restrictions and budgeting guidance soon.
