After the Trump administration cut $95 million in federal research funding to the University of Connecticut and its affiliated hospital system, Connecticut has moved to replace part of the gap. Gov. Ned Lamont announced $35 million in state funding for UConn and UConn Health research programs, funded through a $500 million contingency pool created for human services initiatives affected by federal cutbacks. UConn leaders said the state support is aimed at preserving research programs amid “near daily threats” to research and academic operations, including terminations tied to shifting federal priorities. While the state award is less than half of the federal losses, faculty and administrators described it as a “vital lifeline.” The move highlights how higher-ed research capacity is increasingly shaped by federal grant volatility—and how states are stepping in to protect scientific continuity at major public research universities.
