After the Trump administration cut $95 million in research funding to the University of Connecticut and UConn Health, Connecticut is stepping in with new state support. Gov. Ned Lamont announced plans to appropriate $35 million for research programs, using a $500 million contingency fund created to support human service initiatives harmed by federal reductions. UConn interim vice president for research, innovation and entrepreneurship Lindsay DiStefano said the funding gap follows major disruptions to research priorities and unexpected terminations. UConn emphasized that the state award—less than half of what the university lost federally—serves as a “vital lifeline” to protect the survival and integrity of ongoing research at UConn and UConn Health.
