Policy and programming shifts on campuses are prioritizing recovery and dialogue over punitive responses. California passed a law offering college students rehabilitation and treatment before disciplinary measures after nonfatal overdoses, altering campus conduct procedures and emergency responses. At the same time, some colleges are expanding curricular interventions to strengthen civil discourse. Kalamazoo College’s senior seminar, for example, teaches students structured approaches to political disagreement, aiming to reduce polarization and improve campus climate. These moves reflect a broader institutional pivot: campuses investing in public‑health pathways, behavioral health capacity and pedagogies that teach students how to disagree constructively—changes that affect student‑affairs staffing, training budgets and local community engagement.
