Swarthmore College announced a “Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee” covering tuition for students from families with incomes under $200,000, beginning fall 2027. The institution says it will use financial aid to at least match the cost of tuition for eligible students and highlighted its long-standing access approach, including “need-blind” enrollment and loan-free aid for housing and tuition. The move is positioned as an effort to ensure financial circumstances do not restrict admission or participation in a “transformational liberal arts education.” Swarthmore also noted that 55% of students already receive financial aid and that it meets 100% of determined financial need. For the sector, Swarthmore’s update reinforces how highly selective private institutions with large endowments are redesigning pricing and aid to reduce net cost barriers—potentially raising competitive expectations for other private and public colleges.
