The National Student Legal Defense Network unveiled a Student AI Bill of Rights under its SHAPE AI initiative, urging colleges to commit to transparency, human oversight, privacy protections, and appeal rights as AI systems expand in admissions, recruitment, instruction, and student support. The bill sets out five articles: notice when AI evaluates students; human review and appeals for high-stakes decisions; data sovereignty and limits on commercialization of student work; safer AI use free from bias; and a duty to prepare students to participate with AI as informed citizens. Institutions facing rapidly scaling AI deployments now face an explicit consumer-protection-style framework that could influence contract terms, vendor selection criteria, and campus AI governance policies.
