The Office of Federal Student Aid and some staff are scheduled to vacate their Lyndon B. Johnson Building space and transition to a Treasury building on Washington’s K Street. During the transition window, staff are expected to work remotely until Aug. 17, when the move to K Street is scheduled to fully take place. A second wave is expected Sept. 8, with additional uncertainty about which staff will fully transition. The shift follows an earlier interagency agreement transferring oversight of defaulted student loans to Treasury, and it is being described by federal officials as part of a broader plan to reduce layers of federal education bureaucracy. For colleges, the practical risk is operational continuity at the very moment financial aid advisers and applicants are nearing peak processing periods.
