More than 20,000 students on weekend courses in the UK have been told they must repay “mis-sold” maintenance loans and, in some cases, childcare grants after learning their courses were not eligible, the BBC reported. Letters from the Student Loans Company and universities say repayment is required for over-payments, with at least 15 universities and colleges cited as affected. Affected students say they took out loans based on course descriptions that included in-person weekend teaching and sometimes weekly online learning. The institutions involved, through Universities UK, said the issue stemmed from an abrupt government decision and that they are considering a legal challenge. The National Union of Students said students are “devastated,” and the Student Loans Company told students to seek additional support if repayment would cause financial difficulties.
