The Trevor Project released survey results showing worsening mental health outcomes for LGBTQ+ youth, with bullying and school non-affirmation driving elevated suicide risk. In its latest report of 16,000 participants ages 13 to 24, one in 10 respondents said they attempted suicide in the prior year and more than one-third reported serious suicidal ideation. The report points to protective effects when schools affirm students’ identities. Trevor Project vice president of research Ronita Nath said suicide risk drops when adults, institutions, and communities become more affirming, with schools positioned as a “life-saving support” through safer environments and access to services. The survey also finds gaps in care: 44% of respondents said they could not access needed mental health services, with affordability and transportation barriers cited. The findings arrive amid ongoing policy battles over LGBTQ+ content and student safety at school.
